Geduijrende sijn aenwesen in des Conincx stadt, is van sijn logement tot des Conincx hoff de straten met soldaten beset, ontrent 10 a 12 vadem van malcanderen 2 a 3 man die niet en doen dan briefkens die uijt het logement des Tarters comen malcanderen toe mannen, opdat den Coninck mag weten hoe 't met den gesant van stont tot stont gelegen is, in somma soucken maer alle middelen om hem te eeren ende wel te onthalen, ten respecte van sijn heer ende dat bij den gesant over haer geen dachten gedaen wort[1].
Int begin van 't jaer den duijren tijt, nu al drie jaren geduijrt hebbende, veel menschen daar door verslonden, den gemeenen man geen incomste conde opbrengen gelijck vooren hebben verhaelt, dog d' eene stadt meer als d'ander eenig gewas heeft, voornamentlijck de steden die in lage landen ofte bij rivieren ende morassen leggen, connen altijt nog eenige rijs winnen, sonder dat soude 't geheele land ten naesten bij uijtgestorven hebben; onse gouverneur die ons geen rantsoen meer conde geven, schreeff sulcx aenden stadthouder die ons sonder kennisse vanden Coninck door dien ons rantsoen uijt des Conincx eijgen incomste wiert gegeven, in geen ander stadt conde setten.

The annual homage envoy [aan den Keizer te Peking] is conducted from the palace by the Corean court officials with great ceremony to his hotel, and music is used even on fast days; a number of articles of local produce are taken with him, and special other articles are sent on the emperor's birthday and with formal state communications; these usually consist of raw or manufactured fibres, papers, furs, shells, scents, pencils, dried fruits, candles &c." (Parker, Corea, China Review XIV, 127). — "The formal reception by the king.., is equally intricate and complicated, and comprises the grovelling on the ground by his majesty, three knocks of the head, and the shouting out standing up of the words: "Live for ever"..., with his hands reverently raised to his forehead. This is done in the presence of his relatives, a full court, and the Chinese envoys.
